You can find pretty much every species of poll in Florida right now.

There are traditional polls and automated polls, Internet polls and partisan polls, academic polls and commercial polls.

There are polls where voters checked a box. There are polls that were reported on Fox.

There are polls that called the voter’s house. There are polls where voters clicked a mouse.

Though the numbers were here and there, the outcome was the same everywhere.

Unless there is a major glitch, Mitt Romney will beat Newt Gingrich.

“Well, what if we explain if we explain it really well?” —

President Obama, as quoted by Ryan Lizza in The New Yorker. This is what Obama said when his advisors, in the early parts of his presidency, told him bigger economic plans were untenable to a country and Congress anxious about a growing deficit.

If only, Mr. President, if only.

Law is such an incredible person. First time we figured out we both had an interest in journalism, he told me he’d like to study photojournalism at Columbia or Northwestern, “The best journalism schools in the world!” He asked what I’d studied, and when I told him journalism, at Mizzou, the poor guy looked horrified. For a good two months every conversation began with him apologizing for having slighted Mizzou.

“Those who won our independence believed that the final end of the State was to make men free to develop their faculties; and that in its government the deliberative forces should prevail over the arbitrary. They valued liberty both as an end and as a means. They believed liberty to be the secret of happiness and courage to be the secret of liberty. They believed that freedom to think as you will and to speak as you think are means indispensable to the discovery and spread of political truth; that without free speech and assembly discussion would be futile; that with them, discussion affords ordinarily adequate protection against the dissemination of noxious doctrine; that the greatest menace to freedom is an inert people; that public discussion is a political duty; and that this should be a fundamental principle of the American government. They recognized the risks to which all human institutions are subject. But they knew that order cannot be secure merely through fear of punishment for its infraction; that it is hazardous to discourage thought, hope, and imagination; that fear breeds repression; that repression breeds hate; that hate menaces stable government; that the path of safety lies in the opportunity to discuss freely supposed grievances and proposed remedies; and that the fitting remedy for evil counsels is good ones. Believing in the power of reason as applied through public discussion, they eschewed silence coerced by law - the argument of force in its worst form. Recognizing the occasional tyrannies of governing majorities, they amended the Constitution so free speech and assembly should be guaranteed.” —

- Holmes, dissenting in Whitney v. California

Granted, it sort of annoys me that he couches this all in terms of “the founders thought!” I don’t generally like it when we worship the founders, given that, for example, Jefferson was all about free speech till people said cranky things about him. Adams signed the Alien and Sedition Acts, for goodness sakes. But Holmes can’t really come out and say *I believe* this.

But he does. And so do I.

PS - To clarify, this isn’t meant as a comment on SOPA. Just on free speech.

I hope you’re well. Happy New Year. A big congratulations to the new freelance weekend guy, Taylor Bernam. He’s done some good posts right out of the box. I do wish the main page featured more TV coverage (Brooklyn hippster [sic] Lana Del Rey had one of the worst outings in SNL history last night — booked on the strength of her TWO SONG web EP, the least-experienced musical guest in the show’s history, for starters). In my humble opinion as a loyal customer (you know I love you but the Blog View button will be the eventual cause of my death) and while I know you’re in the midst of an editor change, weekends have been allowed to go awfully fallow — and it was a fallow holiday period for those of us who check your shit 10 times a day by iphone. I know you’ve been watching NBC Nightly News religiously each evening and I’ll no doubt be getting a withering, detailed critique from you straight away.

“One of the most innovative organizations working to re-imagine poverty alleviation along these lines is called LIFT.” —NYT Article. I’ve been working part-time at LIFT (the Boston branch in Roxbury, doing some client service, primarily development projects) since September, and I’m really proud to be a part of it. If you live near a a branch and have some free time, it’s a fantastic place to volunteer.

Jay Rosen is yelling, "I HAVE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR YEARS!"

People are flipping out about this NYT Public Editor article, headlined: “Should The Times Be A Truth Vigilante?”

First of all, I would like to ask what idiot thought that would be a good headline. It is a terrifically bad headline because a) it’s a stupid question and b) it’s not really what the article is about.

The article is really about how to handle situations where politicians spin or lie. Brisbane gives the example of Clarence Thomas saying he misunderstood a particular financial disclosure form, and therefore didn’t report his earnings. The form, however, was extremely clear, and it seems very unlikely Thomas misunderstood. He probably just chose not to report it. Another example is Romney saying Obama apologizes for America. Obama has never used the word apology in any speech ever, but there is nonetheless a certain segment of the population who thinks anything less than a full-throated endorsement of America in every situation and a deeply held belief that America is the BEST COUNTRY IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE AND ALL FOUR DIMENSIONS constitutes an apology.

Brisbane is asking if the NYT should say something along the lines of, “Thomas claims he misunderstood the form. The form, however, is extremely easy to understand, and it is far more likely that Thomas simply chose not to report unfavorable information,” and, “President Obama has never apologized for the United States.”

News organizations have a much more difficult with this kind of fact-check than the kind of, “How much money will X’s budget save?” fact-check. The latter involve hard numbers. The former do not. News organizations are afraid of being accused of bias, so they cling to what Jay Rosen calls the View From Nowhere.

The NYT would much rather take the position that there are multiple valid viewpoints, and all the NYT does is tell you all of them and let you decide. Problematically for the NYT, however, sometimes reality has a well-known liberal bias. Sometimes, there aren’t two valid viewpoints. Sometimes, you can’t say, “Romney says Obama apologizes for U.S. Obama says he doesn’t apologize. Here are all of Obama’s speeches.” Sometimes you have to say, “Romney says Obama apologizes for the U.S. That is not true.”

Welcome to the View From Somewhere, NYT. Jay Rosen would like a thank-you note at your earliest convenience and an apology for ignoring what he’s been saying since 2003.

His overall point is still a misguided one, but yeesh, let’s argue with his actual point here instead of taking him out of context.

liz is, as usual, absolutely no fun at all

Harumph. Well, if we’ve been friends for ten years and I’m no fun what does that say about you?

Now, I’m off to make a cup of tea, edit my resume, and argue some semantics.
